Breastfeeding

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) almost every mother can breastfeed her baby, given the right information and support.

As a Lactation Consultant I believe that breastfeeding matters to women and their babies. Almost all New Zealand woman breastfeed, but some wean earlier than they would like, due to problems that are avoidable or manageable. An IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) accredited Lactation Consultant can make a difference between giving up, and continuing to breastfeed for as long as mother and baby wish.

I will be able to assist you with the following concerns:

  • Painful feeding
  • Cracked nipples
  • Mastitis
  • Breast abscess
  • Under- or oversupply of milk
  • Low weight gain
  • Colic
  • Reflux
  • Unsettled baby
  • Tongue tie
  • Breastfeeding babies with special needs
  • Breastfeeding twins
  • Adoptive breastfeeding

I will see you before and/or after the birth of your baby or babies, in my clinic or at your home. I also offer individually tailored support through skype or facebook messenger (private) if needed. I am available for overnight home support, subject to availability on the day.

Testimonials
I was very fortunate to receive postnatal support and care from Petra as a midwife working in our area. Our baby was having trouble gaining weight after birth. Petra went above and beyond spending additional hours visiting in our home and emotionally supporting me during a stressful time while providing endless expert feeding advice and direction to help achieve good weight gains for baby while ensuring our breastfeeding relationship flourished. Petra clearly cares immensely for both baby and mother under her care and her passion for breastfeeding is very admirable. We are still breastfeeding happily 10 months later! Morgan, Dannevirke
Petra helped bubs and I with breastfeeding. Although we live in different towns and have never met in person, Petra was able to get to the root of our problem when others couldn't. She then not only suggested a solution but provided warm, considerate and regular support as we worked through our challenges. I was constantly blown away by her fast response to my questions and how she regularly checked in on us. I really believe that Petra is responsible for our breastfeeding success - something that means a lot to our family. Catherine, Hamilton
